Dear Kin and Friends,

Henry called last night from Camp Dwyer, a few minutes before he was to go on firewatch. His voice was strong and he said that everyone in his squad has recovered from the bug that’s been going through their ranks for 2 weeks. He told us that his combat gear is packed. The gear is so heavy that he has to sit down to put his pack on, and then it takes 2 buddies to pull him to his feet. How heavy is heavy? Because he’s preparing for what might be a protracted fight, his SAW ammo alone weighs 63 lbs, and he has also packed 20 waterbottles. Henry said his body weight is about 185 lbs now (he’s lost around 10 lbs since being there), and when he’s fully armored, he weighs in at around 330. You do the math. Read more…

Dear Kin, Friends, former Marines and soldiers,

Henry’s first letter has arrived, written Christmas Eve. He says his company spent 3 days at an Air Force base in Kazakhstan en route to Afghanistan. The Marine Corps, as you may know, tends to be the most Spartan of the services and the Air Force, how shall we put it, the most Epicurean. Henry had not been on an Air Force base before. He said the airmen told him the place was “a shithole.” But, coming from the other direction, Henry thought otherwise: “We got real mattresses to sleep on, and they had the nicest chowhall I’ve ever seen.
