The new 1931 Ford sitting in the front yard of the house was shiny black and the glass windows sparkled. Aunt Sadie had just purchased her first car. She had driven Aunt Jane and Aunt Lizabeth over to show Mama and Papa the new car. These adventurous women were Papa’s three older sisters. All three had lost their husbands in the war. The night now held a terror for us that we had never known before the end had come. The night was just another extension of the fear we lived with on a constant basis but the darkness gave way to a fear of the unseen as well as the unknown. When the evil ones first arrived our over confidence in our own power was our undoing. We fought them as well as we possibly could but we were no match for their weapons and savagery. Kill and Kill Again
It was later in the evening and there were fewer of us now so we were pretty well strung out along the skirmish line. Most of the wounded had been choppered back to Chow Duc, so it was fairly quiet. The Sarge was the only one left alive so he was in charge. All of the Officers were dead or wounded, big deal, so now we at least had a fighting chance against the zips. We could hear them out in the bush talking in gook and laughing. I have no idea what the little bastards found so amusing unless they were passing around a mirror and comparing their ugly mugs. The Christmas Box
The big front porch filled with laughter, hugs, and handshakes as family and friends gathered. Papa and Mama greeted everyone. The Christmas Eve gathering was Rosebud’s favorite family tradition. Mama and Papa started the Christmas Eve gathering when they were first married. Sitting on the table beside the front door was a wooden Christmas box. Papa had made it for Mama as a Christmas gift.
